Udzungwa National Park

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique and biologically rich protected areas, renowned for its lush tropical forests, spectacular waterfalls, and exceptional biodiversity. Unlike traditional safari destinations focused on game drives, Udzungwa is primarily a hiking and nature exploration destination where visitors can immerse themselves in pristine rainforest environments. The park forms part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a globally important biodiversity hotspot often referred to as the “Galápagos of Africa” due to its remarkable concentration of endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth.

The park offers a completely different experience from Tanzania’s savannah parks, with scenic trekking trails leading through dense forests, rivers, and mountain landscapes. Visitors may encounter rare primates such as the Sanje Mangabey and the Iringa Red Colobus Monkey, both endemic to the region. The highlight for many travelers is the hike to the magnificent Sanje Waterfalls, where cascading waters plunge approximately 170 meters into the valley below, providing breathtaking views and opportunities for swimming in natural pools. Udzungwa is a paradise for hikers, birdwatchers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts seeking adventure beyond the traditional safari circuit.
