Travellers can also take an approximately 4-hour ferry ride from Nyamisati Village (accessible from Dar es Salaam by bus/taxi).

Meaning of the word Mafia Island

Mafia Island, though the name may suggest otherwise, has no connection to crime syndicates. The name is believed to have been derived from the Arabic term “Morfiyeh,” meaning “group” or “archipelago,” or from the Swahili term “mahali pa afya,” meaning “a healthy dwelling-place.” This island is an off-beaten destination for beachside escapes in Tanzania, far from mostly crowded regions like Zanzibar. It is a renowned destination for snorkelling and whale shark diving.

Best Time to Visit Mafia Island

While people can visit Mafia Island throughout the year, it’s best to explore the place during the dry season, from July to October. This period offers calmer seas, clearer skies and excellent underwater visibility, making it ideal for marine-based activities.

During the dry season, exploring the beach is the best option. However, Mafia Island is not famous for its beaches but is instead mangrove-heavy. Most tourists visiting this place are attracted to snorkelling opportunities within the protected areas of Mafia Island Marine Park.

The whale shark season typically runs from October to March. While occasional rainfall may occur, it enhances the overall experience, adding a refreshing and adventurous dimension to marine encounters. This period offers unique opportunities to observe seasonal marine activity and to engage in a more intimate exploration.

Activities done in Mafia Island

Whale Sharks

The pristine, peaceful tourism destination of Mafia Island is the only place in Tanzania where whale sharks live. Whale Sharks are large, gentle filter-feeders and are often 8 to 10 feet long, giving them the status of one of the world’s largest omnivores. There is high food production in the Mafia Island Channel, which supports the survival of whe sharks. When food production declines, the sharks move slightly away from the mafia and deeper into the Indian Ocean, but do not migrate elsewhere. Tourists can take boat trips and swim or snorkel alongside these creatures under expert guidance. Whale Sharks are timid and shy animals and generally do not attack humans, unless they are in danger and are provoked to defend themselves. Swimming and snorkelling, as per an expert guide’s instructions, enable tourists to witness the behaviour and habitat of these marine creatures. The population is now legally protected, and ethical swimming practices are ensured solely for the admiration of marine life in Tanzania.
